Airport classification in Fly the World

In order to do justice to the different sizes and capacities of airports worldwide, they are divided into a total of 14 different classes in FTW. These classes not only indicate the size and importance of an airport, but also its range of functions. Airports in classes 1 to 5 are classified on the basis of (as far as possible) current passenger numbers. Classes 6, 7, 8 and 12 are based on aircraft movements, if these can be determined. In addition, there are a few special classes, which are explained below.

Classification by passengers:

  • Class 1 ⇒ 101,491,106 - 45,000,001
  • Class 2 ⇒ 45,000,000 - 20,000,001
  • Class 3 ⇒ 20,000,000 - 5,000,001
  • Class 4 ⇒ 5,000,000 - 1,000,001
  • Class 5 ⇒ 1,000,000 - 20,000

Classification by aircraft movements:

  • Class 6 ⇒ 75,000 - 10,000
  • Class 7 ⇒ 9,999 - 1,000
  • Class 8 ⇒ 999 - 366
  • Class 12 ⇒ 365 - 1

Now, of course, it can always happen that the classification of an airport does not or no longer corresponds to reality. It may have grown, shrunk or been completely destroyed by natural disasters or war. In the same way, it is possible that it was assigned to the wrong class in the first place. No problem, because again, nothing is set in stone. The “reclassification” of an airport takes only a few minutes and, if necessary, a little bribe money. The airport database is a construction site and will probably always remain one, if only because of the enormous amount of data. Therefore, it should be mentioned once again at this point that interested, committed and ideally also informed players are welcome to apply for a position as airport administrator.
